The large Oxfordshire village of Goring lies on the River Thames some 9 kilometres south of Wallingford and 13 kilometres north-west of Reading. The village has a rich history, being recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book when known as Garinges meaning ‘Gara’s people’. The village is often twinned with Streatley which is on the opposite side of the Thames to Goring. Today the village benefits from excellent transport links, being on the First Great Western railway, but back in the early part of the 18th century it would have made full use of its prominent position on the Thames. In the early part of that century it held its own race meetings, with records showing that meetings were staged throughout the years 1728 to 1732. However, to date no exact records have been found of when the meetings took place or where the racecourse was located. Furthermore, there are no results from such meetings.
